In 2008 kreeg ons pap de diagnose. In de jaren ervoor waren er al vermoedens.

Ons pap was een actieve, gezonde man, maar dit verandere snel. In de jaren die volgde, ging ons pap hard achteruit.
Ons pap ging niet alleen lichamelijk achteruit.
Zijn geheugen, aandacht, planning en ruimtelijk inzicht veranderde. Ons pap kreeg dementie gerelateerd aan de parkinson, depressie, hallucinaties en wanen. Steeds opnieuw moest hij leren accepteren dat hij dingen, die voor de meeste mensen normaal zijn, niet meer kon… hij werd steeds afhankelijker van anderen.
Dit was niet alleen ontzettend heftig voor hem, maar ook voor ons. Je blijft afscheid nemen van de man die hij ooit was.

Op 24 augustus 2023 hebben we helaas afscheid moeten nemen van hem. Hij was pas 71…

Het is echt van belang dat er meer onderzoek komt om levens te redden en verbeteren.
